The winery building was designed by architect
Graeme Scott of Auckland based company ASC Architects.
The
building received a design award in 2001 from the NZ Institute
of Architects.
Citation for Ransom Winery
Conceived and built
in two stages, this delightful building exhibits strength
in the simplicity and clarity of the glazed
axial gallery.
This space connects the arrival point with the vineyard
beyond, projecting visitors into the landscape.
Natural materials
of polished concrete, steel and heavy timber columns
predominate.
The wine production process is visible from the gallery,
revealing
the purpose of the building. Hidden away to one side is
a small owner’s flat.
The gallery opens into a raised,
semi-walled and paved courtyard enabling wider valley views
and the drama of
the vines to
be enjoyed.
Wineries With Style
A beautiful coffee table book has recently been published
in the UK by respected wine title publishers
Mitchell Beasley, called Wineries with Style. This
is essentially a book about winery architecture, and it comprises
a selection
of 80 wineries from around the world, including Ransom Wines
and only three others in New Zealand.
This book, by English
wine writer Peter Richards, is a serious review of winery
architecture globally and it contains intelligent
commentary and discussion besides excellent photography.
We are very pleased to be included, both for ourselves and
our
architect, Graeme Scott of ASC Architects in Auckland. |
