Spring In The Vineyard

The vineyard in spring is a luxuriant and productive place to be: new shoots on the vines growing almost perceptibly and sprouting leaves, tendrils and inflorescences which will blossom over the next few weeks. With the aid of the breeze, of which we have plenty in the current el nino conditions, the fragrant little flowers will form into berries and bunches.

In addition to the usual shoot placement and thinning which we do at this time of year, we are also in the midst of a fairly ambitious planting programme. Over recent weeks we have planted around 900 chardonnay vines and 400 cabernet franc, and in the next little while we will be planting 900 syrah vines – almost 2.5 acres in total.

We have recently landscaped and re-furnished our outdoor seating area, designed and largely developed by Gabriel, so are now better set up for summer visitors. We are already becoming very busy, so if you plan to visit for lunch it will pay to make a reservation, especially on weekend days.

New Releases

Two recent releases: the 2013 Clos de Valerie Pinot Gris and the 2012 Mahurangi red. The Clos de Valerie is nicely developed and drinking well now – perhaps slightly more crisp than its immediate predecessor, and with a gorgeous palate-sweetness which belies the fact that it is a dry wine. The Mahurangi is soft, round and full – very satisfying and a great outcome from the non-summer of 2012.
This week we are launching our first ever 100% Malbec, from the excellent 2013 vintage. This is a beauty – dark and dense in appearance with a firm, plummy palate, soft ripe tannins and a mouth-filling richness.
