Product Description

Ruby-crimson in colour with a complex nose of black cherries, tar and leather. Has a firm, savoury and sweet-fruited palate with a hint of oak and a warm finish. A nicely structured and balanced wine which will satisfy over a number of years if carefully cellared. Will benefit from decanting prior to serving, in its youth.

What's the most exciting wine I have tasted from Matakana? Syrah. You better believe it! The Ransom 2007 is firm, dry and a delicious Rhone styled wine.

The impressive debut 2007 vintage is dark and youthful in colour, with a spicy, slightly toasty bouquet. Mouthfilling, with concentrated plum, black pepper and oak flavours …

Ransom K Syrah is striking in both colour and stature. It has a rich, creamy aroma with the initial, tarry, savoury flavour becoming rather juicy. Black and red fruits, cake spices and oak provide a robust mouthful of succulent red.

Bright ruby colour, moderately intense. Supple, peppery red with new leather, floral, cranberry, herb and spice (white and black pepper with a suggestion of star anise). An elegant rather than blockbuster style that nonetheless reveals power with its lingering finish.

Ransom Syrah 2010 Matakana 14% – Lots of youthful wild red fruits of Syrah with raspberry and fresh blackcurrants then a toasted barrel layer cut with white pepper and brown spices. Youthful still and promising. A taut palate with a lot of bottle development time ahead. Moderate+ in body with medium+ acidity and tannins. Integrating and maturity required over the next 3-5 years. Quite dry on the finish, but again needs time. Overall good stuff!

The 2013 vintage is fragrant, rich and supple. Medium to full-bodied, it’s a very approachable red with ripe plum and spice flavours, a gentle seasoning of nutty oak, and a finely textured, smooth finish. Best drinking mid-2016.
